Villa Palau

Villa Palau – Palau – Sardinian Coast

4 Bedrooms – Pool

Location and Surrounding Area. Villa Palau is a lovely, contemporary property that would be ideal for a larger family or group of friends wishing to indulge themselves in the splendours of glamorous, northern Sardinia. The villa is immersed in the total privacy of 11,000 m2 of immaculate grounds and yet only a five minute drive from the bustling harbour town of Palau. This corner of Sardinia was brought into the jet-set limelight by the Aga Khan in the 1960s and has been famous as a millionaires playground ever since. You’ll find some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches and crystalline turquoise waters you will have ever seen and let’s not forget that the Sardinians constantly rank amongst the longest living people on earth so they must be doing something right. In addition to the perfect beaches, spectacular scenery and myriad of sporting activities, Sardinians enjoy a marvellous climate, exceptional wines and a long culinary tradition.

Palau is a lively resort with beaches, a fun nightlife, restaurants, street markets, a marina and spectacular views across to the seven Maddalena islands, which are only a panoramic ferry-ride away. Bear Rock is the symbol of the town and is an enormous boulder that has been shaped by the winds over the years into the form of a bear. There are also so many unspoilt, white-sand beaches within this archipelago that you’ll be hard-pressed to know where to start! For a more secluded experience, drive over the causeway to Caprera Island and spend a day sunbathing at Cala Portese or visit the museum dedicated to one of the founding fathers of Italy’s unification, Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The strikingly photogenic coastline that stretches from Capo D’Orso to Isola dei Gabbiani (Seagull Island) offers plenty of long sandy beaches such as La Sciumara and lots of pretty coves like Porto Pollo. You could also choose to take a boat ride and enjoy the view from aboard a stylish yacht as you sip champagne on the deck.

Nearby Olbia was known as the Happy City in ancient Greek and its pretty port and historical centre are well worth visiting. The Gulf of Olbia overlooks the islands of Tavolara and Molara. The Kingdom of Tavolara was set up in the 19th century by the Bertoleoni family as an imaginary state and today the “King of Tavolara”, Tonino Bertoleoni runs a family-owned restaurant near the beach.

Despite the wonders of the coastline, inland Sardinia is not to be missed. It is criss-crossed with thousands of walking, biking and horse-riding trails; in fact, there are still plenty of areas where you can find yourself immersed in an unchanged, completely natural landscape with absolutely no sign of mankind, just the silence of the mountains, cork woodlands and centuries-old sheep and goat trails.

Villa Palau is only a 5 minute drive from both Palau and La Sciumara beach, 10 minutes from Porto Rafael, Porto Pollo and Capo d’Orso and 30 minutes from the glamorous Porto Cervo and the Pevero Golf Club. 40 minutes to Olbia and La Maddalena island including short ferry ride. The nearest international airport is Olbia, which is only 40 minutes away.

The Property. This delightful, stone property is built on two floors with a picturesque set of external steps linking them. It can sleep up to a total of 13 guests if you make use of the queen size sofa bed plus there are two baby cots if needs be. The four double bedrooms are all light, bright, spacious and airy with a tastefully simple décor plus the beds are extra long for our taller guests. One of the double rooms has a stylish bunk bed over the main bed and would be ideal for parents wanting to keep a closer eye on their child. There are four large bathrooms, which ensures plenty of privacy for everyone.

The sleek, modern kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need to try your hand at recreating some Sardinian delicacies on the useful central island, which contains the hob plus there is a double-door fridge and two ovens. You’ll find large, sliding glass doors from the kitchen out to the outdoor dining area, which creates a natural flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The veranda hosts a long, wooden table with superb, conversation-worthy lamps under a wood-beamed veranda. This would make an ideal spot for the kind of lunches that start around midday and don’t finish until late in the evening when it’s time to go to bed! There is even a handy barbecue nearby for grilling up some fish or meat.

There is both an indoor sitting room with elegant yet comfortable sofas that yearn to be snuggled into and plenty of shady outdoor areas for relaxing with a good book.

The floodlit gardens are extensive and the swimming pool area is decked and ideally located so that the pool is in the sunshine and the lounging area is under the shade of an ancient olive tree. You’ll find the outdoor shower useful for rinsing off after a splash in the pool. In addition to all of this, there is a children’s playroom and an outdoor playground, a fully equipped laundry room with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board.
